* AFL

HAWTHORN AFL club said allegations of rape against its players during a trip to Hawaii five years ago were unsubstantiated.

The Hawks declared the matter closed after media reports raised the issue yesterday.

It was alleged multiple Hawthorn players raped a US woman while on a post-season trip to Hawaii to attend the wedding of then team-mate Daniel Chick.

Hawthorn said it ``fully assisted" the Australian Federal Police in an investigation at the time and one player, no longer with the club, had been asked to provide a statement.

Broncs appeal date

BRISBANE Broncos' appeal over having two points stripped by the National Rugby League for an illegal interchange has been postponed from Friday to Thursday of next week.

The appeal - to be heard in Sydney by an NRL Appeals Committee hearing chaired by Sir Laurence Street - was postponed ``by mutual agreement with the NRL and the Brisbane Broncos".

Jockeys under whip

STEWARDS yesterday continued close scrutiny of riding tactics with jockey Hugh Bowman questioned at length regarding his performance aboard At The Show at Warwick Farm.

Bowman's mount finished a length second to France Soir in the Sydney Races TV Handicap (1400m) after being held up for a run at the top of the straight then storming home once clear.

Bowman is the third jockey in a fortnight to be hauled into the stewards' room to explain riding tactics.

Extra Athens berth

AUSTRALIA has won an extra Olympic berth in the equestrian dressage event, the Equestrian Federation of Australia (EFA) said yesterday.

Australia was offered the berth because of its world rankings and will now be represented in all three disciplines at the Athens games.

Australian selectors will now face the difficult task of deciding who will take the individual spot between the team's top three riders, Ricky MacMillan, Mary Hanna and Kristy Oatley-Nist.
